ACI March Newsletter
President's Report

Hope everyone is having a good year, it’s March already and 2017 just keeps flying by. I think we set a record for attendance at the Dan R. Brown Concrete Awards program this year even though we had fewer project entries than in 2015. A huge Thank You to everyone who came; especially to the three folks who work so hard every year to make our GA ACI Awards Banquet a showcase event; Steven Maloof, Derek Brown and Nadia Groome.
Our speaker for this month’s lunch meeting is Brett Lord, CRSI’s newest Southeast Region Manager. Brett is no stranger to our industry, having started over 19 years ago in the old Williams Brothers concrete lab over on Glenwood Avenue. He will be giving us a Rebar Primer that will look at some history and concrete reinforcing steel basics. You know concrete and reinforcing steel are two of those things that just work so well together, like yeng and yang, salt and pepper, me and my lovely wife (25 years this month). Remember we have a new lunch meeting location this year, The Westin at 7 Concourse Parkway near the King & Queen Buildings at GA 400 and I285. Hope to see y’all there.
ACI Certification activity this year is keeping the Certification Committee very busy, it seems we have 50+ examinees every month now and I hear from my ready-mix friends finding CDL Drivers and plant personnel has reached critical mass. Construction activity and the need for qualified people to support the concrete industry in Georgia looks real challange for 2017! If you have friends outside our industry that may be looking to make a career change, this could be the year, maybe encourage them to take a look at concrete. I know it has been awfully good to me.
Immediate Past-President Wilbur Bragg has been hard at work putting together our annual Virgil D. Skipper Seminar for this summer. It looks very promising that we will be having a Program Presentation and Tour of the new Falcon’s Stadium downtown some time mid to late June. Watch you e-mail for details.
Look forward to seeing you on March 24,

ACI Fellow Announcement
GA Chapter ACI Member Kirk Deadrick named ACI Fellow
ACI will recognize 27 members who have been honored with the rank of Fellow of the American Concrete Institute (FACI) at The ACI Concrete Convention and Exposition in Detroit, MI. The new Fellows will be introduced during the Opening Session and Keynote Presentation on March 26, 2017. The ACI Convention is scheduled for March 26-30, 2017, at the Detroit Marriott at the Renaissance Center. More information can be found at www.aciconvention.org. As stated in the ACI bylaws, a Fellow is an individual who has made “outstanding contributions to the production or use of concrete materials, products, and structures in the areas of education, research, development, design, construction, or management.” The Fellows Nomination Committee selects those to be considered for the award, and then forwards its recommendations to the Board of Direction for final action at each fall meeting of the Board. Nominations may come from the committee itself, from local chapters, from the International Advisory Committee, or by petition signed by at least five current ACI members.
The ACI Board of Direction approved the nominations of this latest group of honorees at the ACI Convention – Fall 2016 in Philadelphia, PA. Including the new honorees, 856 members have attained the rank of FACI, first established by the Institute in 1973.
J Kirk K. Deadrick is the Director of Quality for Ready Mix-US at ARGOS, Atlanta, GA. He also serves as the head of Research and Development for the U.S. footprint of ARGOS. He is a member of ACI Committees 211, Proportioning Concrete Mixtures; 237, Self-Consolidating Concrete (founding member); and 305, Hot Weather Concreting. He is also a Past President of the Georgia Chapter – ACI. He has presented globally on subjects such as prescription-to-performance, high-range water-reducing admixtures, troubleshooting concrete, and training in the ready mixed business. Deadrick received his BS in civil engineering from the Virginia Military Institute, Lexington, VA, in 1981.
Luncheon Recap
We had our first lunch meeting of 2017 this year at Kennesaw State Universities’, Southern Poly Campusin Marietta, GA. We had a good crowd with many students in attendance; thanks to KSU Professor, Daniel Kuemmerle for organizing the meeting space for us.
Our speaker, Kevin Cail, Chief Operating Officer with CarbonCure Technologies gave us a run down on their concrete admixture technology. Kevin opened with some detail on what CarbonCure is. In a nutshell it is a proprietary admixture system that is installed at a ready-mix plant that injects liquid Carbon Dioxide (CO2) into fresh concrete. Click here to view the presentation.
CO2 is collected and delivered to a storage tank at the ready-mix plant in compressed liquid form. A dispensing system, similar to a typical liquid admixture dispenser, doses the liquid CO2 into the ready-mix truck. For central batch plants the CO2 is injected into the concrete discharge stream as it enters the truck, for dry batch plants the CO2 is injected directly into the ready-mix truck with the tail water. The whole set-up is integrated with the batch computer.
Kevin then explained the technology behind CO2 injection and what physically happens in the fresh concrete. Through reverse carbonation the liquid CO2 vaporizes and almost instantly reacts with Portland Cement grains to form Nano calcium carbonate or limestone particles in the concrete mixture. These Nano limestone particles become nucleation sites for Calcium Silicate Hydrate, which supports a more efficient and/or complete cement hydration process.
Recent experience and lab studies suggest a 10 to 16% increase in cement hydration, which Kevin suggested could be used to increase concrete strength or optimize a particular mixture to use less cement. Kevin offered a cost reduction of 30 to 70 cents a cubic yard with no measurable effect on most normal concrete attributes, like workability, air content durability, freeze-thaw, color, texture and finishing.
Kevin then briefly shared some specific project examples in Atlanta, Charlotte, Chicago and Calgary. Great interest and multiple questions came for our group. In closing 2017 President Wayne Wilson presented Kevin GA Chapter Travel Mug and thanked everyone for their attendance.

Concrete International Magazine Article
This month in ACI Concrete Materials Journal…..
Reprinted from ACI Concrete Materials Journal with permission from American Concrete Institute (www.concrete.org)
Decided to shake it up a little this month and share something a little different than our normal Concrete International Magazine article. ACI also publishes a peer-reviewed Concrete Materials Journal that is jam packed with some of the latest on-going research in our industry. Information published in ACI Materials Journal includes: properties of materials used in concrete; research on materials and concrete; properties, use, and handling of concrete; and related ACI standards and committee reports.
One article form this quarters journal, I though interesting as it relates to one of GA ACI Scholarship winners lunch meeting topics back in December. Mechanical Characterization of Concrete Masonry Units Manufactured with Crumb Rubber Aggregate; the article looks at an experimental investigation to investigate the effects of replacing varying percentages of fine natural aggregates with crumb rubber in concrete masonry units (CMUs), creating rubberized concrete masonry units (RCMUs).
The mechanical and physical characteristics of RCMUs having 0, 10, 20, and 37% crumb rubber were investigated and presented in this paper. The unit weight and water absorption of RCMUs were measured. A scanning electron microscope (SEM) analysis was used to study the global structure for RCMUs and the interfacial zone. RCMUs were also exposed to extreme weather conditions for 72 days inside an environmental chamber. Furthermore, RCMUs were subjected to rapid freezing-and-thawing tests. The RCMUs, as well as grouted and ungrouted masonry prisms, were tested under monotonic and cyclic axial loads. The results indicated that RCMUs with high rubber content displayed higher values of axial ultimate strains. RCMUs exhibited a significant strain softening while; conversely, failure was quite brittle in CMUs. RCMU specimens exhibited an improvement in compressive strength after several cycles of severe weather exposure. The CMU specimens, however, exhibited degradation in their compression strength capacity. The water absorption was higher in RCMUs than it was in the CMU prisms.
