President's Report

As February begins it has brought an exciting time to Atlanta. The Super Bowl was just here and is yielding to an even more exciting event, the Dan R. Brown ACI Awards ceremony. I can almost guarantee that it will be just as exciting as the big game and we may even have more touchdowns scored.

On a serious note, though the game didn’t live up to the Hype, our city and state did. The skyline looked every bit as impressive as the other major cities who have recently hosted the Super Bowl and it continues to grow and evolve by the day. When an event comes into our city, it is always good to look at the view realize that many of these projects have or will be part of the Dan R. Brown Awards program.

I am always proud of the accomplishments of our industry and even more so of the local accomplishments. I look forward to seeing everyone soon to celebrate the amazing structures that will be on display.

Luncheon Recap

We had a lunch meeting on Friday, January 25 at the Westin Atlanta Perimeter North Hotel. We had a good group of people in attendance. The presentation was given by Joshua Lee of the Bekaert Corporation.

Joshua is the Engineering Manager for Bekaert’s Building Products, North America. He graduated from the University of Wyoming with a degree in Architectural Engineering and was a practicing structural engineer for 12+ years prior to joining Bekaert. He is a member of ACI and is an associate member of the ACI Committee 360, Slabs on Ground. He is experienced in the design of structural systems for industrial, commercial, governmental, and sports facilities, including the recently opened Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, GA. At Bekaert, Joshua works to educate structural engineers, architects, owners, and contractors on the many benefits of reinforcing concrete with fibers versus traditional methods, such as rebar and mesh.

Joshua gave a presentation on steel fiber reinforced concrete.

In closing, 2019 Vice President Kelly Roberts thanked everyone for their attendance and presented Joshua with the iconic Georgia Chapter Travel Mug.  There were a number of questions and comments at the end.

UGA Engineering Student Competition Team Places 1st in the 2018 ACI/ASCC Concrete Construction Competition.

For the second year in a row a team of UGA Engineering Students placed 1st in ACI/ASCC’s Concrete Construction Competition.  Team members included Kevin Childs, Amanda Gruner, Angela Nguyen, Ryan Horn, and Sterling Benson with their faculty advisor Dr. Stephan Durham.  They will be recognized at ACI's upcoming Fall Convention and an upcoming issue of Concrete International.

The competition’s expert estimator calculated the project bid to be in the neighborhood of $196,432; the building estimate came in at $129,270 (division 3) and the sidewalk, curb, and gutter estimate came in at $67,162 (Division 32).  This did exclude the gutter system in the sidewalks (gutters by others but placed by the concrete contractor).  Using these numbers as a baseline and comparing to all student entries this year’s top three winners, a tie for first place, were:

  • 1stplace tie = Team 2056, University of Georgia
  • 1stplace tie = Team 2057, University of North Carolina
  • 3rdplace = Team 2065, Auburn University

ACI Reported they had 32 teams competing this year, from the United States and 5 other countries and asked everyone to an eye on the ACI website for the 2019 competition.

Polymetric Microspheres Provide Resistance to Harsh Winter Conditions

This article presents a study that is timely to this season and the ongoing winter weather in much of the nation.

The article outlines the test program and results after three years of exposure to freeze thaw cycles in a marine environment as well as conclusions as to durability.  Very interesting !
