President's Report

Happy Thanksgiving from all of us at Georgia Chapter ACI. Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday. I love that it gives us the opportunity to reflect on gratitude and connect with the people most important to us. I certainly appreciate the feast too, and the leftovers even more.
I hope you were able to join us for our October luncheon at our new time and location. We had a great turnout and the change to Thursdays got a very positive response. The Whitley is going to be a wonderful venue for us going forward. The topic of global emissions challenges, carbon reduction goals of green building programs, and how the cement and concrete industry can use innovative CO2 mineralization technology to reduce embodied carbon while increasing performance was presented by a guest speaker from CarbonCure Technologies. Everyone who attended gained a better perspective on the challenges facing our industry in these areas.
Our next luncheon will be held in conjunction with the Georgia Chapter of the International Concrete Repair Institute and will cover building structure condition assessment. Please plan to join us on Thursday November 17th at The Whitley Hotel Buckhead from 11:30am to 1:15pm for this event. This program by Scott Weiland, president of Innovative Engineering Inc., will focus on the investigation and evaluation of building and parking structures in the wake of the Surfside Condominium Collapse in Miami. We will visit for a few minutes, and then lunch will be served at noon. Our Georgia Chapter ACI luncheons are a fantastic opportunity to network with your peers, earn Professional Development Hours, and further your industry knowledge. In closing, remember to check that all your certifications are up to date. If you or anyone on your team needs to renew or add additional certifications, check the GA ACI website for upcoming classes.

Our Next Event
Program: Building Structure Condition Assessment: How to Avoid Catastrophe

11:30 am – Registration
12:00 noon – Luncheon
This is a Joint Luncheon with Georgia Chapter ICRI
Topic Description: Rightly so, building owners are taking a closer look at their building and parking structures in the wake of the Surfside Condominium Collapse in Miami. While it could take years for the investigation to be completed, there are many clues included in previous inspection reports and photographs taken of the aftermath. These clues point to typical causes of deterioration to any type of structural system including reinforced concrete, precast, masonry, structural steel, and wood framing. This presentation will address each of these systems including photographs of typical deterioration and how deficiencies are identified. Since most structural deficiencies result from water intrusion, building roofing and waterproofing will be address as well. Inspection laws, standards, and checklists will also be provided and presented.

Concrete International Magazine Article

This month in Concrete International…..
Reprinted from the August, 2022 (V. 44 No. 11) issue of Concrete International with permission from American Concrete Institute (www.concrete.org)
This month’s article was top of mind with the recent beach erosion images we saw from Hurricane Nicole. Interesting article; GFRP-RC Seawalls as a Means of Coastal Fortification and Extended Service Life, with some detailed design details on a recent rehab of Charleston’s famous Battery Sea Wall. Fortifying our infrastructure with concrete, always a good choice….
In this month’s issue our GA Chapter also had a short one-page mention; How ACI Georgia Tripled Its Membership, pretty much a fluff piece for Star Chapter (the web page support platform), but any mention gets our name out there…
Luncheon Recap

This was our first gathering at our new Lunch Meeting Venue, The Whitley Hotel in Buckhead. We had near capacity crowd and based on initial reaction a positive response to this new venue. All good so far….
Our scheduled speaker, Jessica Wilson, LEED GREEN ASSOCIATE & TRUE
Advisor, Strategic Business Manager, CarbonCure Technologies, had a last-minute issue and could not make it. Doug Clarke, Director of Sales, stepped in to gives an update on CarbonCure’s successes in reducing the embedded carbon foot print of concrete. He covered some CO 2 sequestration basics and the Carbon Cure methodology. He also shared some recent project data and success stories.
