President's Report

I just returned from the ACI Spring Convention in Salt Lake City, Utah. The conventions are a great place to learn more about concrete, get involved in a code committee and network with other ACI members from across the world. I urge you to attend one if you have the opportunity. Atlanta will be hosting the Fall 2021 convention.

The Georgia Chapter was recognized as an Excellent Chapter for 2017. Our Past President, Wayne Wilson, accepted this award on our behalf at the convention. Only 20 chapters out of the approximately 125 chapters worldwide received this award.

If you missed our meeting at KSU last month, Scott Kelley gave a great presentation on Supplementary Cementitious Materials.

I hope you will join us at our next luncheon on April 27. Our speaker, A.J. Marisca with BASF, will be discussing Metakaolin in concrete. This meeting will be held at the Westin Perimeter North.

Best Regards,
Tom Pfeifer

Luncheon Recap

We had our second lunch meeting of 2018 this year at the Marietta campus of Kennesaw State University. We had a nice group of people in attendance. The presentation was given by Scott Kelley. Scott is the technical services and quality control manager for the South Region of the Lehigh Cement Company.

Scott covered a lot of ground with SCM’s. A brief history of the Roman use of volcanic ash and the longevity of famous Roman structures was presented. This was followed by an overview of the chemical reactions in concrete formation and how SCM’s influence them.

Fly Ash types C, F, and N were reviewed as well as slag and silica fume.

For each type of SCM, Scott talked about strength, in both the short and long term and how each SCM would modify the strength gain curves. Durability was also covered for each SCM type and what could be expected for the long term concrete as it ages. Other topics discussed included corrosion resistance, salt resistance, permeability, alkali silica reactivity, sulfate resistance, and workability of the mix designs.

In closing, 2018 President Tom Pfeifer thanked Scott and everyone for their attendance.
There were a number of questions and comments at the end.

Our Next Event

Program: Metakaolin in Concrete Applications
Speaker: A.J. Marisca, Regional Sales Manager, BASF

On Friday, April 27 2018, The Georgia Chapter of ACI will host A. J. Marisca at the Westin Atlanta Perimeter North hotel. A.J. will talk about the use of metakaolin in concrete applications.

A.J. Marisca is Regional Sales Manager for BASF Kaolin, responsible for the Big 10,
ACC and SEC regions.  AJ obtained his BS Chemistry and MBA Marketing from Rutgers University and has been in Industrial Sales for nearly 30 years, with stints at Union Carbide, Lonza, Vinings, and Degussa before joining BASF Kaolin in 2008.

During his time at BASF, AJ has been involved in all aspects of industrial kaolin sales,
including architectural coatings, wire and cable, inks and rubber and plastics. AJ has
spent much of the past 5 years exploring the use of metakaolin in construction
applications.  He has authored 2 CEU courses on metakaolin and recently was a
panelist at the VA Construction Conference.

When AJ is not selling kaolin, he is either homebrewing, photographing his son’s travel
baseball team, or walking his black lab, Velo.

Outside the Cylinder

Every year, ASCE has a competition between student chapters that includes a concrete canoe competition.

Rules govern such things as reinforcement, concrete mixes, finishing, dimensions, admixtures, presentation of the canoe, display, race rules and many, many other things.

A panel of judges score a sheet for each canoe taking into account the oral presentation, aesthetics, and design.

Schools duke it out for the trophy and learn to make some concrete in the process! Enjoy the photos of the KSU Concrete Canoe team.

Naked Concrete
When I saw the name of the article, I thought to myself…”If this title doesn’t get
someone to read the article, then all is lost”….

This article is about Reston Station in Reston, VA. It is a 16 story exposed concrete
frame with the lateral system mostly showing on the outside. The article details how the
structure was visualized and designed as well as considerations taken for the finish of
the exposed concrete.
